The Bartlett Municipal Development District (BMDD) was created under City of Bartlett Ordinance No. 2013-09 after a November 5, 2013 Special Election on the adoption of the BMDD. Since that time the BMDD has been collecting a one-half of one percent sales tax on the Williamson County side of Bartlett. These funds have not been spent and have accumulated in a designated BMDD bank account which currently has a balance in excess of $31,000.00 dollars. These funds can be spent on various projects for public parks, park facilities, open space improvements, landscape of public facilities, and projects to promote new and expanded business enterprises that create or retain jobs, and for streets, drainage and related improvements and for other lawful purposes.
Several central Texas cities have active Municipal Development Districts. The cities of Rockdale and Elgin have active programs. Some of the projects in Rockdale include a Strategic Economic Development Plan, Patterson Civic Center Improvements, Business Park Development, Building Façade Improvement Incentive Program, Downtown Renovation, Swimming Pool Improvements, Utility Line Extension and a future Splash Park Recreation Facility.
The Bartlett City Council is desirous of activating the Bartlett Municipal Development District and appointing a Board of Directors of five to seven Bartlett citizens. To be eligible to serve on the Board, you must be a resident of Bartlett and reside within the City limits or the extraterritorial jurisdiction (ETJ) of the City. The Board would meet on a monthly basis and develop and select projects for funding. Some of the projects that might be considered include enhancement of the Becky Caldwell Baseball Complex, establishing a building façade enhancement program for historic buildings in Bartlett, creating a strategic plan for economic development, advertising the City of Bartlett as a "Business Friendly Destination Community", establishing a formal business park and other similar projects.
If you would like to participate by serving on the Board of Directors of the BMDD, please contact Bartlett City Councilman Dean Roome (254-527-4422), or stop by City Hall for more information and to sign up. Interested persons will be appointed to the BMDD Board by the City Council. Filing deadline is February 27th.
